Fishpond Canteen (2020-2021) was a sustainable art festival by Art Together, set in Tai Sang Wai, a small wetland fishing village in Hong Kong. Themed around “eating”, it explored the quiet symbiosis between the fishpond farms and surrounding ecosystem. Farmers work with the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society (HKBWS) to harvest sustainably, leaving behind leftover fish to support the local bird population. Humans and birds quite literally share the same meal.
Studio Biped joined as resident artists, making regular visits to talk with farmers and researchers, watch birds, and understand the rhythms of life around the village. We created What’s Under, a simple narrative game simulating fishpond farming, built around the idea that most of the farming process happens invisibly, beneath the water’s surface.
We also ran several workshops with HKBWS, where participants sketched egrets by the ponds. Each drawing was scanned and imported into the game on the spot, populating the final scene with everyone’s unique birds.
The game is currently being updated – check back later if you’d like to play!

Aside from importing the drawings into the game, we also overlaid them onto a live camera feed, making it look as if everyone’s egrets had come to life on the pond in front of us – an idea borrowed from AR apps like Pokémon Go.
