Whitelight Motion’s project details

I had the pleasure to work with Whitelight Motion again in 2022 – see Hotel Royal Chihpen’s 30th anniversary promo.

In 2021, Whitelight Motion produced a 6-minute music video for Sorry Youth’s Walks of Life, funded by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture. The story follows a young woman who left her rural hometown for the city, only to return for her estranged father’s funeral and discover how her elder brother has preserved their family’s culinary legacy. The narrative touches on Taiwan’s rural-urban migration and the way love is often expressed through quiet actions rather than words.

As character animation director, I oversaw the delivery of polished, coloured character animation based on Whitelight’s character designs and storyboard. I supervised a key animator and an inbetweener, personally keyed many scenes, and handled cleanup and quality control throughout production.

I did the keys for this shot. Judith Chan did inbetweening and Anita So colouring.

Keys by me, inbetweening by Judith Chan and colouring by Anita So. I added a bit more details to the girl’s reaction upon cleaning up.

This shot was animated based on a 3D previs Whitelight provided. I did the keys, Judith Chan and I both worked on inbetweening. Anita So did colouring.

One interesting challenge of this project was delivering emotional subtlety through soft and elegant expressions. Whitelight did magic with lighting and compositing, as you can see in this before-and-after.
